AN EXCERPT FROM ONE OF GABE’S ONLINE JOURNALS:
Dear Diary,
It rained today, for the first time in a long time, and was really enjoyable. It hit the spot.
I decided to walk the last six blocks home from school in the heavy rain and through ankle deep puddles where the streets were flooding. I wondered if I would look like a big goof for doing so, or for not staying on the bus, or for not getting on the train, or for not using the umbrella I brought with in my backpack, but still couldn’t come up with any reason as to why I should care about looking like a big goof.
My pants, hat, shoes and jacket will probably take a good few days to really dry out. And thanks to music by The Field (eg: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcCR8zwUdOY - Over The Ice, and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnHNwQ_Y3KI - Silent, and http://www.myspace.com/winterwhale - Winterwhale (see: The Spaces Between Us) for setting the mood.
Interesting fact: puddles in my shoes with soaked-through socks sort of just feel like walking in wet sand after a while.
Signed,
Gabe
COMMENTER:
The rain, unfortunately, did not “hit the spot” for me today. And I saw someone else intentionally walking through the puddles. I wondered why she would do that.
GABE:
I passed a guy wearing a business suit, with no umbrella, standing ankle deep in a puddle where a parking spot used to be. He was rubbing his thumb and forefinger together like he was testing a fabric with his head cocked upwards and eyes closed. It seemed awkward until I realized I was basically doing the same thing… Since he was well dressed, I like to think that he wasn’t just some loony taking a bath in the street. But, haha, who knows? This winter has really been crampin’ my style.
